Road Trip Review

Our first road trip was a success. We had a lot of fun and did a lot of driving. Camping was challenging in the beginning, but we (Oliver) eventually got better about going to sleep. Every time we put him in the tent, he would get a little hyper and crawl all over the place with a huge grin on his face. He felt like the tent was a playground. We only spent one night in the rain and were only ran out of two campgrounds by bears.

Our destination was Skagway to visit my sister Kaycee and her family. They were on a cruise up to Alaska and we thought it would be great to spend a day with them in one of our favorite places. We took a ride on the White Pass and Yukon Railroad. It is a beautiful train ride and the kids had been looking forward to it all summer. I enjoyed the ride and tried to pay as much attention as possible. Seven years ago on our way to NY, Jake and I hiked the Chilkoot Trail and took the train back to Skagway. Because we had to be to Lake Bennett by noon and had to hike out 7 miles, we got up really early. Plus I was tried after a 33 mile backpacking trip. I slept a little on the train ride back to Skagway and Jake has never let me forget it. Anyways, the ride was just as phenomenal as I remember the first time.

On the way into Skagway, we stopped and hiked International Border Falls. As the water melts off the glaciers up in the mountains, it pours down the mountain side as a series of calm waterfalls. At the very bottom the water flows in two directions, 1- towards Skagway and the ocean and 2 - towards BC and the Yukon and the Yukon River. It was a fun hike and was especially welcome after a few days of driving in the car.

A few other highlights of the trip were going to the hot springs outside of Whitehorse and swimming, Tim Horton's, turning Oliver's car seat around, going to the park, and hanging out as a family. It was great adventure. One we will repeat.

And when Jake got tired of driving, Oliver was willing to help out.
